Wish I had time to post daily!!

OK,...maybe it's more discipline than time, but I've been busy...really!!  I just wrapped up 3 separate classes and in about 3 weeks 2 more get started.  In the meantime, I've been reading many posts from many other bloggers (who apparently have the time AND the discipline to post daily!) and I have dozens of more tips and tricks and a bit of news.

First, for those of you who are looking for family tree software, keep an eye out for a FREE version of Family Tree Maker.  I've been using Family Tree Maker since before Adam was evicted.  And I upgraded whenever an upgrade was available.  The good news is that the new software is FREE....  Most companies who market genealogy software have a pay version and a stripped down free-but-you-can-upgrade-later-for-a-fee version.  That's never been the case with Family Tree Maker, which happens to be owned by Ancestry.com.

The bad, or at least the not so very good news, is that you have to speak German or Swedish.  Huh???  That's because in its first iteration, it's only available in German and Swedish for now.   That's actually good news, because the Germans and the Swedes will hopefully help Ancestry get most of the bugs worked out before it's opened up the the galactically bigger English speaking audience, who, I'm sure, will overwhelm the demand.  It's certainly better to have a few hundred issues with a few thousand customers (who will be converted to paying customers) than a few thousand issues with a hundred thousand customers and risk losing their future business.

Next, if you've never been able to find the record of Aunt Molly's third marriage, don't give up.  Keep in mind that all the purveyors of on-line genealogical documents are adding digitized images at a furious pace.  On any given day, I'll get an e-mail that says "So-and-So.com has added 3.5 million records" or whatever.  In other words, Aunt Molly might show up with a little perseverance AND good research notes.  PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep track of where you've already looked.  When you get negative evidence (when it's not there) you can keep that in mind when you go and take another shot at the records.  Just because it wasn't there the last time doesn't necessarily mean it won't be there the next time.

Have we talked about spelling and how it doesn't count?  I think so.  But it bears repeating.  The message here is "Be creative!" I've demonstrated this a gazillion times.  Just because Grandma said that's the way her father spelled the name, don't believe her!  Two reasons, at least.  Great Grandpa may not have been a world class spelling bee champion.  Witness my own grandfather's eloquently written diary that I've been posting "Lest We Forget".  I think my grandfather forgot!  And second, especially with census records, the enumerators wrote what they heard.  'Nuff said!

Web sites.  I've put together a list of about 30 or 40 web sites that are pretty handy.  Rather than listing them here, send me an e-mail at dave@oldbones.info and I'll attach the Word document to an reply.  There's the standard ancestry.com and so forth but a few interesting ones focusing on Canadian, Italian, Polish, Swedish and Irish ancestry as well as military sites, immigration and a blog or two.

For those of you that wouldn't mind traveling to Ludlow, Mass and contributing to a fund raiser, I'll be at the First Church in Ludlow for the 4th or 5th series on "Introduction to Genealogy and Family Research".  Usually, I give my series of presentations and have a few pass-outs but since this involves some cash, I offer to do 3 or 4 hours of personal research for the participants.  AND you get a certificate!  It's $49 per attendee or $79 for a couple.  Details at Old Bones Genealogy.

One more: The Gardens at Wilbraham in Wilbraham, Mass is sponsoring me to give a 2 hour lecture on genealogy on Grandparent's Day, Sunday, September 8th at 1 in the afternoon.  I'll have to get you the details if you're interested.  It's free but I think there's a sign up list.

Lest We Forget---May 25, 26 and 27, 1913

Back to my grandfather's diary.  In review, my grandfather was Clement Elexis Dickson, born in 1888 in Williamstown, Glengarry County, Ontario.  Williamstown is a small area outside of Cornwall.  Sometime in the early 1900's he went to work for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railroad.  I never spoke to him about it; he died when I was 2 1/2 years old.  I never talked to my grandmother about it; I wasn't aware of the diary until years after she died in 1962.  I was probably in my early teens when I "discovered" it.  One of my aunts described it to me as just something that grandpa kept with him when he worked on the railroad.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the diary.  Thus, my motivation to get the story it tells out there. It's certainly not a "page turner"; it's not "War and Peace" or any other classic.  It's just my grandfather's thoughts...that's it!

My original intent was to post the entries one day at a time as the year 2013 went by.  Well, the only thing that "went by" was the time!  I've fallen WAY behind!  But, here I am , trying to make good on my original effort.

[NOTE: The other day, I was going to comment that "baseball" was called "base ball" in the 19th century. Clem had used "baseball" and my comment was going to be that the combined words were already being used in 1913. Then, along comes my grandfather and honestly, I'm not sure if he used "base ball" because that's how it was spelled in 1913 or because, as we have seen, his spelling left a lot to be desired!

Lest We Forget May 1, 2 and 3, 1913

Just a reminder as these diary posts go up to the blog. The diary was written during the year 1913, one hundred years ago. Since this is the 100th "anniversary" of the diary, I wanted to post one a day as the year went on. But, as always happens, life gets in the way! That's not necessarily a bad thing, but life does get in the way!

At any rate, I wanted everyone to also understand that Clem's handwriting and spelling skills leave a lot to be desired. There are many words that I try to figure out based on context. I'm probably right about half the time. As to various locations, I frequently resort to Google or Google maps. Also, this is a "transcription" meaning that I try to stick to "WYSIWYG" or "What you see is what you get". I write what he wrote, what I see on the pages, warts and all! Capitalization, punctuation...who needs it!

I've found a few pictures that are in the public domain which means I can save them to my hard drive and post them. I haven't found a picture of 1913 Edmonton, but 2013 is a large, major, thriving city in Alberta. What would Clem think of it today? For that matter what would anyone from the early 20th century think of flat screen TV's, smartphones, hybrid cars. Actually, when you think about it, you could buy and electric car in 1913...

Donald and I did not get up till 10 30 this morning. We met K & J at 12 00 had dinner. Donald bought a ticket for Moose Jaw he is going down to work on the CPR
he left at 10 oc to night we all went to [-?-] to see him off

I was al (sic) alone in town to day K & J were working all day. I met Henry at 11 oc this morning. he left town tonight but coming back sunday I may get work then

Weather cold with a little snow fall in the afternoon
K & J work in the morning but lazed of this afternoon.
We three play pool all afternoon.
There was nothing this evening so we went home early

More Grand Trunk Pacific Photos -- 1913

I'd really like to be able to give you a description of the exact location of these photos or even better, who's in them... But it's all a mystery! All I know is that they came from my grandfather's album of his days working with the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in Western Canada in 1913. I never heard of any stories from any family members, so I'm pretty lucky to at least have the album and the diary!

These days must have been tough on Clem and the other Grand Truck guys. I can just imagine what it must have been like for him; 2,000 miles from home, no work, no income... At least it was getting warmer! He's given us enough weather reports, that's for sure.

Not much going on these days. It seems that work has run out for now and some of the men had to go out and look for jobs to keep themselves busy and make some money. The tone is almost a little depressing. At least Clem was not the only one in this position.

Weather very cold in Edmonton. I did nothing but walk around town all morning. I went over to Edmonton to look for a fellow to see if I could get work but there was nothing doing.

Weather about the same with a little sun shine
A.E. came in this morning K.J & I met him on the corner of 1st and Jan (?)
we all romed (sic) around all day. A E was to go out tonight but he did not go.

I was in town with A E all day

Photos from Clem Dickson's Grand Trunk Pacific Album

Unfortunately, there are no notes to go with these pictures and they are GLUED into the pages of the album. So I can't even see if he wrote on the backs of any of them. And that's why some are shown 4 to a page...I don't want to just rip them out.

I can identify my grandfather, Clem Dickson, in some of them. He is always pictured wearing hat but I don't see him in any of these. In one of the shots, he's reading the paper and in others he's standing with his co-workers. Tomorrow, I'll post the one showing the bear that they chained to a large crate. The camp "mascot" maybe??

Our day of rest started in early this morning with the washing to finish in time for the games of ball.

We all stayed in the car all day. We should have gone west but Cullerne changed his mind
Weather was fine a little east wind.
After supper we all went out and played ball till dark.

Tuesday, April 15, 1913

Today was the same no work all day weather fine We have nothing to do but eat three meals a day. The boys all went to the show I stayed and wrote letters.

Well, that's it for these three days...not much going on once the "washing" was done! At least it's not the dead of winter. Who would want to sit in a freezing "car" all day with no work to do. At least early spring in that part of Canada must have been breathtaking! All I have are black and white photos which I've posted a while ago, but maybe I'll do a separate post to put them up again. You'll just have to use your imagination to add the color!

I know...I know...I told everyone that I was going to get caught up on Clem Dickson's diary. A few "issues" got in the way... We'll talk about that later!

Here's the entry for Saturday, April 12, 1913:

Henry and I left Edson at 8 oclock for McLeod Bridge to bring the work to Edson that we should have done the day before. got back to Edson at 11 oclock 8 miles

I wrote a letter to Jack Morrison

I had a bath and put my close to sock for the morning.

Let me re-emphasize that these pages are transcripts, meaning WYSIWYG: What you see is what you get! Clem's spelling was always creative! And this page is an example: "close" = "clothes" and "sock" = "soak" and others.

Another mention of the weather warming up. Cullerne makes a rare mistake!

Steve and I took the Local out from Edson to Peers to finish our work to Edson Left Peers at 9 0clock had dinner at Rosevior [?]and we found out that Cullerne gave him the wrong list and we could only work out for 10 miles then we Pump in to Edson 8 miles.

Slow Monday...

Juneau and I left Wabamun at 8.05 for Entwistle had dinner at Fallis. Arrived 5.20 at Entwistle 21 miles

Weather was fine a little East wind.

Cullerne was to bring the outfit up today but no train stoped (sic) for him

Juneau and I stayed all night with Bert.

Did these guys play tricks on each other on April Fool's Day?? I kinda doubt it...

Weather about the same as yesterday The train man broke our rest about 5 Oclock the morning as we move to the north yards arr. at the north yards at 12.30 I had no breakfast this morning dinner at the State at 1 Oclock then went over to town. I met Jim and stayed over at the camp att night with him.



Every once in a while, I like to remind everyone that I'm attempting to transcribe what Clem wrote. In other words, what I see is what you get!! So, many...MANY...words are misspelled, punctuation is virtually non-existent and capital letters are few and far between, other than the "W" in "Weather"! Many words are illegible to me, so if you can figure them out, let me know, I'll appreciate it!

Lest We Forget---Monday, March 31, 1913

So, there was no washing on Sunday, but here it is getting done on Monday. Actually, Monday was a traditional wash day in colonial times. I've heard people claim that Monday was traditional because that's the day the Pilgrim's first got off the Mayflower. And you can bet THEY needed to do some laundry! Phew!!!

Weather was fine and soft. I had a big washing today some I should have done yesterday. I finished at 11.30

In the after we all went out to run breek [?] to the river on a land line Worked till 4.30 then came in

"Land line"?? I'll be it's not what we know of today as a "land line"!!
