It's been a while since I've had any time to post a new blog. Some might be happy about that but then again, some might be waiting at their computers, anxiously awaiting more words of wisdom from Old Bones. But for what it's worth, here goes!
The Western Massachusetts Genealogical Society conducts monthly meetings from September through the following June. I've been the Vice President for about a year now and as I see it, we've made some great progress. First, I offer membership applications to everyone who attends my genealogy classes. That has garnered for us at least a dozen new members in the past few months. An conversely, some of the members have signed up to take some classes with me! To make our program more interesting, we've been conducting a few of our meetings via Google+ Hangouts. Actually, the first real "virtual" meeting with Maureen Taylor, the Photo Detective, was via SKYPE. We've had 2 others so far, one with Dick Eastman author of Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and the other with Dear Myrt, your friend in genealogy. Dick gave us a very comprehensive look at MyHeritage.com, a very competent competitor for Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org. It's worth a look. Dear Myrt challenged us in an interactive night of learning how to completely organize your genealogical research in 3 months. Really! 3months!!
Next up is the New England Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists, better known as (and easier referred to) NEAPG. This group is composed of members of the parent association, the APG, who live in New England and find it worthwhile to meet and network with other professional genealogists throughout the region. As of January 1, 2015, I will move from the Vice President seat to President of NEAPG. This one's a little nerve wracking for me. Although I operate as a professional and have several years of professional experience, I find many of the members to be people that I've known and respected for many years, some with national or even international reputations. Nice to be rubbing elbows with this crowd!!
Another aspect of my role in NEAPG is as the delegate to the New England Regional Genealogical Consortium's biennial conference. The next NERGC convention will take place in Providence, Rhode Island April 15th through 18th. If you're interested in attending, click here for a conference brochure and registration form. And I suppose I should mention that I will be speaking there on Saturday, April 18, 2015. Not that you'd come just to listen to me, but I'll be presenting "Search Strategies You Haven't Tried - Search Sites You Never Thought Of." There'll be plenty of "BIG" name genealogists giving presentations in many areas of genealogy and genealogy research. Some of the tracks include Colonial New England, Skill Building, Telling Family Stories, Researching Women, Technology, Heirlooms, Migration (from other countries and across the US), Photographs, Military Research, Immigration/Naturalization, Ethnic Genealogy, DNA, Advanced Methodology and a great deal more!
Quite a bit more to talk about, but I think I need to save a few items for another day.

Maureen Taylor, Genealogist and Historic Photograph Expert
Live in Western Mass? Interested in genealogy and historical photographs? Mark your calendar for November 6, 2013 at 6:00 PM. Maureen Taylor, a nationally renowned lecturer, genealogist, author and expert in historic photography will give a remote presentation via SKYPE on photographic genealogy at the Western Massachusetts Genealogical Society. She has published 2 volumes of Revolutionary War Patriot photographs! Yes!! These are photographs of veterans of the Revolution who fought at some period between 1776 and 1783 who sat for the new technology in the mid 19th century. Maureen is collaborating with award winning documentary film producers Verissima Productions on a film based on the books. You learn more about Revolutionary Voices at www.lastmusterfilm.com. The public is invited to this event at no charge. But we encourage everyone to become a member of the Western Massachusetts Genealogical Society, or WMGS. We meet 10 times a year on the first Wednesday of the month from September through the following July. Dues are only $20/year.
In the coming months, we'll have a variety of programs including a "field trip" to the Museum of Springfield History, a repository of an amazing collection of published and unpublished genealogical resource material.
In the spring, a book signing with Kerry Hotaling, local author of "What They Endured, What They Wrought" recalling the regimental casualties of the Battle of Gettysburg which available at Amazon.com. Kerry is donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each book to the Gettysburg Foundation.
The Gravestone Girls , cemetery historians, will bring their expertise in ancient gravestones, the culture that created them, the symbolism...fascinating program. Next, another remote presentation on "Breaking Down Brick Walls" from D Barry Sheldon of Genealogists.com.

Western Mass Genealogical Society
Although WMGS is a relatively small, local society, we have an exciting group of speakers lined up for this season. We're reaching out nationally with new technology that allows us to hear from experts from just about any location with internet access! We meet the first Wednesday of each month from September to June. The meetings are open to the public so members, bring your friends. Membership is only $20 per year.
Our first speaker when our season opened last month was Cliff McCarthy. Cliff is the Archivist at the Museum of Springfield History. He gave a very understandable presentation on DNA and how it relates to family research.
Our next meeting is October 2nd (which happens to be my sister's birthday...Happy Birthday Diane!!) we'll hear Lisa Dougherty, an expert in Irish research. You can visit her web site by clicking here: Upstate New York Genealogy. I've heard her speak at other venues. She is very knowledgeable, highly experienced and offers a variety of genealogical services. And she has a very interesting presentation. Bring a notepad...I think it would be handy!!
Soon, we'll be hearing from Maureen Taylor. Maureen is an internationally known photo expert. While that in and of itself doesn't sound all that relevant to family research, a quick visit to her website will tell the full story. Click the name here Maureen Taylor where you can read about here books, such as 3 volumes of PHOTOGRAPHS of REVOLUTIONARY WAR PATRIOTS!! These are Americans who were involved in the war and who survived into the age of photography, sometime after 1839. Speaking of "ages", Maureen will be with in a virtual environment; she'll be at home and we'll be at the Agawam Senior Center!!
D. Barry Sheldon has also agreed to speak to us in another "virtual environment" in the spring. He has many subjects to discuss but I felt that "Breaking Down Brick Walls" might be a good one. I'm open to suggestions!
Denise Martinez of the Chicopee City Clerk's office is a returning speaker who will give us insights into what a clerk's office can do to aid our research, what records are open to the public and other issues that are specific to Chicopee such as hours, fees, etc.
Yours truly will present a research "lesson" titled "Strategies You Never Thought of...Search Sites you never heard of!" That will be the same program that I'll be presenting in a webinar with dates to be announced.
All in all, it's a great year for WMGS. We've added quite a few members, we have some great presentations coming up, our Thursday evening computer research coaching group has had every seat filled for one week in a row!! We're on a roll! By the way, don't be discouraged about the full room for the Thursday research coaching group. Just get in touch with the group at westmassgen@gmail.com or with me at dave@oldbones.info to check on availability. We meet the 3rd and 4th Thursday each month from September to July at 6 PM in the computer lab at the Agawam Senior Center. These sessions are free to the membership and a token charge of $10 to non-members.
