This may very well be my shortest blog, but I wanted to post this while I was thinking about it. Wouldn't it be great to know who the enumerators interviewed in a census record? The 1940 census will tell you. Just to the right of the person's name you'll see an X in a circle. Bingo! There's your answer!
Yes, isn't that cool? I learned that from a webinar last year. Helps to calculate how accurate the answers are.
ReplyDeleteGood point and I should've mentioned it. For example, if the "second" wife was asked what year her immigrant husband came to the US, she could be off by decades! Don't blame her as she could be relying on information her husband may have given her casually. Also, she could be raising her step-children. When were they born? Check, check and check again! Previous census records, probate, military records... All might be very useful to corroborate the data or prove it's not exactly correct!
